The County Seat of Washington County is Brenham, a lovely town of 15,000 halfway between Austin and Houston. Renowned as home of Blue Bell Ice Cream, its downtown is very upscale and worth a visit.
Washington County is also known as the "Birthplace of Texas" where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed in 1836.
Brenham has a complicated history - it was the logistical center of the Confederacy in Texas. At the time of the War, Washington County was the most populous in the State.
This was an interesting park that shows the construction of the many subterranean cisterns that underlay Brenham in the 1800's. They were used for conserving rainwater for drinking and fighting fires (see above).
