Fayette County

Coffee at the Big State Coffee House and Roastery, also site of the Noble Swede Gallery

Court House built in Romanesque Revival style in 1891 would not appear out of place in Scotland.  Lots of interesting ornamentation.
Also has the unique feature of an interior atrium with natural light.  Unfortunately the building was closed for the weekend.

Next stop was the Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Historic Site.
The monument, which commands a great view of the Colorado river commemorates the resting place of the Texan casualties of the "Dawson Massacre" of 1842  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawson_massacre and the "Meir expedition" of the same year.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mier_expedition.   This was just a small part of the general instability of the Texas Republic, during repeated attempts by Mexico to re-take the territory.   These events helped seal sentiment for Texas' eventual application for Statehood.

This is the house constructed by  Heinrich Kreische, who began building his brewery on this site in 1860.  By 1879, it was the third largest brewery in Texas, but primarily served the local area.

Ruins of the brewery, which closed in 1884.     This was right after Adolphus Bush brought his highly mechanized techniques to San Antonio, used by Lone Star which dominated the Texas beer industry until Prohibition.
Fayette County is renowned for its bluebonnets.
My early 50's retro overnight spot the eponymous "Oak Motel"
